[Netease smart news November 17 news] artificial intelligence (AI) and human diagnostic experts work together to complete more than their own work. Qure.ai, headquartered in Mumbai, is using deep learning to conduct rapid diagnosis and recommend personalized treatment options.
It is estimated that artificial intelligence and automation will replace half of the jobs in the next 10 years. However, global technology leaders seem to disagree on the potential long-term impact.
According to Ellen Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, artificial intelligence has the potential to bring about a catastrophic future, and requires active supervision. On the other hand, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed that Musk was a man who spurned the tone and accused him of the "doomsday" as an unnecessary negative emotion.
Tom Gruber was the co-founder of Siri (later acquired by Apple) and he saw a middle road. In a recent TED talk, he mentioned that the "humanized artificial intelligence" (human and artificial intelligence work together) can actually accomplish more tasks than humans and artificial intelligence perform independently. He gave an example of how the artificial intelligence classifier and human pathologists can achieve 99.5% accuracy through cooperation.
Qure.ai, established in January 2016, is a Mumbai-based startup that is trying to achieve similar feats by integrating the power of machine learning and human diagnostic expertise. The startup used deep learning techniques to help diagnose the disease and recommended personalized treatment plans from medical imaging data such as CT, MRI scans, and X-rays.
In addition, Qure.ai is one of the 30 most promising Indian technology start-ups selected by YourStory's Tech in 2017. Here is their story:

Their story
Qure.ai was co-founded by Pooja Rao (head of research and development) and Prashant Warrier (CEO). He has a strong technical background in medicine and machine learning. Pooja is a well-trained doctor who holds a doctorate degree in research from the International Max Planck Institute for Neuroscience and studies in neuroscience and machine learning. She previously worked at the National Institute of Genomics and worked as a data scientist at GoDataDriven in Amsterdam.
Prashant holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and a Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology and established a personalized digital marketing company called Imagna Analytics, which was acquired by Fractal Analytics in 2015.
Qure.ai was founded as a small team of engineers and was established in Mumbai in January 2016. Now, more than a year has passed, Qure.ai is still a streamlined team of 14 employees.
In an interview with YourStory, Pooja explained the common difficulties faced by doctors and patients. Over the years, the volume and complexity of medical imaging have greatly increased. For doctors, this means an ever-increasing workload, so there is a higher chance of misdiagnosis and mistakes. In some cases, a small mistake is enough to bring life-threatening danger to the patient.
Based on their understanding of the field, Pooja and Prashant know that deep learning technology can handle large amounts of medical data and detect abnormal conditions based on a fixed pattern. Therefore, they decided to co-found Qure.ai, and spent about a year doing research and development, and constantly training their algorithms.
Pooja explained how the machine and humans cooperate to reduce the possibility of misdiagnosis. “Our algorithm reads X-ray or MRI scans to detect any abnormalities. If something goes wrong, it will point out to the doctor that the doctor will Passing this information is equivalent to getting an enhanced version of the scan. This makes their work easier and more efficient. It also prevents them from missing information they might not see."
How Qure.ai works
Radiologists use sophisticated software to view these professional scans. Currently, the products offered by Qurei.ai are either independently developed or based on existing technologies.
Qure.ai's artificial intelligence is working
Pooja explained that one of the greatest uses of its technology is to prevent medical accidents such as accidents or strokes. she says,
“If you diagnose correctly and treat it in time, you can treat stroke effectively.†It can help detect bleeding and fractures faster, thereby preventing medical accidents.
Deep learning requires a lot of high-quality data. Pooja said Qurei.ai relies on partners and open medical data to train its algorithms. They currently have a large CT scan database and an MRI database. "Our chest X-ray products have processed more than 1.5 million X-rays."
With regard to accuracy, Pooja pointed out that its chest X-ray solution has approached human accuracy, and its quantitative solution has become more accurate than humans.
Qure.ai's solution has been deployed to four clinics in Mumbai. Pooja said that their early customers include radiologists, hospitals, and medical device manufacturers. The startup company adopts a SaaS-based subscription model based on the scale of the customer and customization needs.
According to Pooja, deploying artificial intelligence in hospitals is an exciting task and a challenging task. Because there is a lot of data, Pooja believes that "India is one of the best locations for deploying artificial intelligence in the real world. We have collected feedback on the usefulness of artificial intelligence for diagnostic experts."
Industry Overview and Future Plans
A report from U.S. technology company Nvidia stated that medical records, such as doctor reports, test results, and medical images, are gold mines for health information. This reiterates the belief that the use of GPU-accelerated deep learning to process and study the patient's condition and compare the patient with more other cases can provide better treatment for doctors.
Big companies and startups all want to do business in this area. Google researchers designed an eye-scanning algorithm to detect a common blindness, showing the potential of artificial intelligence to change medicine. The algorithm can observe retinal images and find diabetic retinopathy.

New York-based Behold.ai and San Francisco-based Arterys can use common radiography data and leverage techniques to identify diseases and use any MRI machine to visualize and quantify the flow of the body's heart.
Enlitic, based in San Francisco, is another company that analyzes medical images to identify tumors and potential fracture risks. The work of Qure.ai seems to be very similar to Behold.ai and Enlitic.
Currently, Qure.ai is seeking to establish business in Mumbai and Delhi, but their long-term goal is to expand to other parts of India. When talking about the possibility of overseas expansion, Pooja said, "When we have all the regulatory framework, we plan to expand beyond India."
Qureli, which is currently developing its own initiative, plans to conduct a round of financing in the future, at which time they will seek to enter the international market.
