After eight years of hard work, the main project of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge officially opened on July 7th!
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the world’s largest cross-harbour bridge, island and tunnel project built in China. It connects Hong Kong’s Lantau Island, the Macau Peninsula and Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. The total length is 49.968 kilometers, and the main project “Sea Bridge Tunnel†is 35.578 kilometers long. The tunnel is about 6.75 kilometers long and the bridge is about 29 kilometers long.
It is reported that the completed Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will become the longest cross-sea bridge in the world and one of China's new landmarks. It is known as the “Mount Qomolangma†of the bridge sector and the British “Guardian†called it “ One of the seven wonders of the modern world.
The cross-harbour tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge marked the completion of the major project of the bridge and was a major step forward from the formal opening of the bridge.
In September of last year, the main bridge of the bridge was already connected, and now the subsea tunnel has also been successfully completed. According to Yin Haiqing, deputy general manager of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Island Tunnel project of China Jiaotong-Hong Kong, the subsea tunnel has been fully transferred to internal construction and will have opening conditions by the end of the year. By then, overland trips from Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macau will be shortened from 3.5 hours to half an hour.
According to reports, after the completion of the bridge, a sea rescue platform will be set up on the artificial island. "If an accident occurs in the submarine tunnel, the rescue force can arrive within 3 minutes. If there is an accident on the bridge, it can arrive within 5 to 7 minutes." Haiqing said.
