YouTube announced support for 60fps real-time video streaming

On May 22, YouTube announced that it is using HTML5 to play live streaming video, while users can now watch live streaming video at 60fps. Previously on October 29th, YouTube quietly opened support for 60fps video uploads, but these videos required the use of YouTube's HTML5 player. In January 2015, YouTube abandoned the Flash player and, by default, played these videos using an HTML5 player.


YouTube now announces support for 60fps real-time video streaming, but advertises this as an "early preview" that only applies to HTML5-compatible browsers such as Chrome, IE, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Youtube said that in terms of real-time streaming, Youtube focuses on the HTML5 player because Youtube thinks it provides the best experience.

YouTube's live streaming uses HTML5 players, and variable speed playback is now possible. Users can look back in the stream and even chase real-time footage at 1.5 times or 2 times speed.

Now, YouTube automatically transcodes live streaming to 720p60fps or 1080p60fps. If the user’s device cannot handle 60fps live streaming, YouTube also plans to provide real-time streaming at 30fps.
