Professor Zhao Yuanjin, the national key laboratory of bioelectronics, first developed a color-changing “heart chip†to monitor the heart's response to different drugs through color changes of the chip, thus eliminating animal and clinical trials. "Organic chip" refers to the biomimetic construction of micro-organs on microfluidic chips to replace organisms, drug evaluation and biological research. It is one of the most popular new tools in biological research today, supporting the development of innovative drugs in China. And the development of translational medicine is of great significance. Professor Zhao Yuanjin's research team combines a gel with a special optical structure with live cardiomyocytes. After the cells are fixedly grown on the surface of a jelly-like soft hydrogel, their contraction and relaxation can cause shape changes in the gel film. . As the crystal arrangement inside the gel changes, the interference between the reflected light changes. Therefore, the pulsation state of the cardiomyocytes can be visually reflected by different colors, and then the cardiac response is monitored by the color change of the chip, thereby constructing a "heart chip" having a microphysiological visualization function.
The color-changing “heart chip†developed by Prof. Zhao Yuanjin is the first in the world and represents a major breakthrough in the key technology platform for innovative drug research and development in China. The research results were published on the world's top journal Science Robots on March 29th, which is the first time Chinese scholars have independently completed papers in the journal.
