Overview:
The circuit described here uses a precision, high-side current-sense amplifier (MAX9918) to monitor the load current over a wide input common-mode voltage range. This circuit is suitable for applications where the input common-mode voltage reaches a negative voltage due to inductance, reverse battery or transient events.
Current detection in electric power steering (EPS) systems
Unlike conventional power steering systems, EPS does not have a hydraulic pump or liquid. Instead, an electric motor is mounted on the steering rack via a gear mechanism. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the steering sensor detects the position and speed of the steering wheel. This information is sent to the power steering control module along with the steering torque sensor input from the steering shaft. To determine the required steering assist, the control module accepts inputs from the vehicle speed sensor, traction control, and stability control system (Figure 1).
