Intel brings Qualcomm to push new WiFi standard
With the rapid spread of IoT devices and the emergence of high-definition streaming services, the demand for more data and bandwidth has once again become a driving force for the development of a new generation of WiFi standards with higher data transmission speeds.
The new generation of WiFi standards is WiGig. Intel and Qualcomm say they have extensively tested with WiGig-compatible client devices to test as many scenarios as possible. Of course, it is impossible to test all the ways in which wireless technology is used, but the two companies hope that their efforts will ensure a certain degree of interoperability as consumer WiGig products become mainstream.
802.11ac WiFi uses the 5GHz band, WiGig uses the 60GHz band, and the data transfer rate is up to 4.6Gbps (575MBps). However, WiGig will not become mainstream for a long time to come. Acer and Pulian presented the first WiGig-enabled notebooks and routers at the International Consumer Electronics Show this year.
In addition, WiGig is not a panacea for all bandwidth issues. One of its shortcomings is that the transmission distance is short and the ability to penetrate the wall is weak. However, WiGig may replace the traditional connection on PCs, TVs and other devices. Another application area of WiGig is virtual reality, which supports low-latency, high-speed data transmission without wires.
