Demystifying Opel's new technology for developing LED eye tracking headlights

According to the US media Autoevolution on March 16th, GM's European subsidiary confirmed that the future Opel car will use the headlights of eye tracking technology.

Opel Motors is headquartered in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and is marketed in the UK under the Vauxhall brand. The car manufacturer insists that it is not a fantasy to dominate the headlight beam of the car by the driver's eyes. Ingolf Schneider, director of Opel Automotive Lighting, said: "For two years, we have been developing the direction and intensity of the lights in the direction of the driver's eyes."

Simply put, it is to install a camera in the car. With sophisticated software, a set of peripheral infrared sensors and photodiodes, the camera scans the driver's eyes at more than 50 times per second at night. Through sophisticated algorithms, the system is able to determine where the driver is looking and then adjust the headlights from vertical and horizontal.

The biggest problem that Opel's lighting engineers have overcome is how to naturally move from one focus to another. Schneider added: "We have successfully developed a sophisticated delay algorithm to ensure that when the driver is temporarily distracted, it also ensures the direction of illumination of the car.

It is reported that "in the next 18 months", Opel's first LED matrix lamp will replace the adaptive xenon headlamp technology. The LED matrix light will work in combination with the Opel front camera.
