Recently, in addition to the release of a 49-qubit super-quantum test chip, Intel also introduced another revolutionary chip, Loihi, for Neuromorphic Computing. The chip can simulate human brain behavior through digital circuits, and is expected to bring an exponential burst of AI artificial intelligence and higher energy efficiency.
The chip's codename "Loihi" comes from the name of the Hawaiian submarine volcano. It has been related to it earlier, but it was only an FPGA simulation. Today, Loihi has basically taken shape, and it is now a fully functional silicon chip. The Loihi chip can transmit information through pulses or spikes like the human brain, and automatically adjust the synaptic strength, through the various feedback information in the environment, to learn and give instructions.
Intel said that the neuromorphic chip can eventually be used in any environment that requires real-time data processing, such as a more secure camera and smart city infrastructure, real-time interactive communication with autonomous vehicles, traffic lights automatically adapt to traffic conditions, and cameras looking for missing people. It is reported that Intel will share Loihi chips with leading universities and research institutions in the first half of this year, and use them for more complex data sets and problems.
We don't know the specific parameters of this processor. According to previous news, Loihi contains 128 computing cores, each integrating 1024 human neurons, a total of 131,000 neurons, connected to each other through 130 million synapses.
Compared to more than 80 billion neurons in the human brain, Intel's computing scale is really inconspicuous, only a little more complicated than the shrimp brain. But compared to the computing scale of traditional chips, this is a milestone breakthrough, representing the direction of future processor development.
