The thermoelectric separation of the LED package means that the electrical path of the chip and the package heat sink are not electrically connected. From the structure of the conductive path, the LED chips can be divided into two types, one is a vertical conductive type, and the other is a horizontal conductive type. The vertical conductive type chip is a chip having electrodes on both upper and lower sides, and the substrate material of the chip is conductive; the horizontal conductive type chip is because the substrate material used is insulated, so both electrodes are led out on the same side. See Figure 1.

The chip is connected to the package heat sink through the substrate. For a vertical conductive chip, the heat sink is equivalent to an externally powered electrode, which is the integral of the thermoelectric path. For the horizontal conductive chip, the electrodes of the chip are all on the upper surface, and one electrode lead of the chip can be soldered on the heat sink to form a thermoelectric path; or it can be soldered on the heat sink, and is electrically isolated from the heat sink. On the electrode, this achieves the separation of the thermoelectric pathway.

Whether the LED package requires thermoelectric separation depends on the structure of the package and the actual application. Can't say that everything is necessary, or not all.
