On September 12, Verizon announced the acquisition of the Internet of Things startup Sensity Systems (hereinafter referred to as "Sensity"), but did not disclose the specific details of the transaction, the acquisition will be completed in the next few months.
Founded in 2010, Sensity is a company that provides smart LED lights for streets, airports, shopping centers, etc. in Sunnyvale, Calif., in an effort to capture the opportunity for global urban lighting to transform into LED lights. The Climate Group called for "every city and public facilities" to switch to LED energy-saving lamps in 2025.
At present, some metropolises and their urban circles are on the road and do a good job. New York has started to replace street lights with LED energy-saving lamps in 2015.
Sensity said that in the future, the city will use tens of billions of LED lights, and Sensity will become a high-speed IoT platform that provides multiple services. Light owners can embed network technology into their systems, so they can introduce a range of sensors to test humidity, ambient light, seismic activity, radiation, wind speed, temperature, air quality, and even parking spaces. All of these features are supported by a high-bandwidth wireless network that supports both peer-to-peer and mesh networks. Sensity said that 42 smart cities around the world have adopted this technology.
Sensity Chairman and CEO Hugh Martin mentioned in a press release: “Looking at the world, rapid urbanization imposes a heavy burden on urban services. The infrastructure that provides critical social services is aging, and efficiency is low, such as firefighting, First aid, public transportation, lighting, sewer systems, health systems, etc. Sensity has long realized that the Internet of Things will be the key to breaking this deadlock."
Verizon's actions in the Internet of Things are frequent. In addition to this acquisition of Sensity, Verizon launched ThingSpace, an Internet of Things platform based on the Internet and serving developers last year. Last month, it spent $2 billion to acquire a web-based network. GPS positioning system company Fleetmatics, the company's products enable fleet operators to track the fuel consumption, location, speed, miles, etc. of a car.
In the field of technology, some ingeniously innovative IoT products have also seen significant growth, including refrigerators, doorbells, beds and ovens. The Internet of Things is about to usher in a booming era. As the largest wireless network provider in the United States, Verizon has invested huge sums of money to build an infrastructure that connects all aspects of the city. This is the clearest indication that logistics networks are not a short-lived gimmick.
“Sensity is a company of IoT solutions that serves a strong ecosystem of partners that make up the ecosystem. This collaboration will accelerate the transformation of large-scale projects and drive the digital transformation of cities, universities and venues.†Verizon is responsible for the business. Mike Lanman, senior vice president of products and the Internet of Things, added.
Prior to this, Sensity had received more than $70 million in capital injections.
