Swiss Federal Railways SBB is exploring a blockchain solution to the authentication of employees who work on railway tracks. This pilot project can serve as a model use case for issuing and validating various organizational credentials.
Swiss Federal Railways SBB is working to implement its first blockchain use case, which provides authentication for its employees working on railway tracks. In fact, a collaboration between Steel Business Briefing, Linum Labs and uPort is exploring a possible solution to verify workers' credentials, and published a blog post on the proof of concept last week.
In a Medium article published by Linum Labs on Nov. 12, the Switzerland-based team of blockchain developers unveiled a proof of concept that it built with SBB over a 5-week period. This open-source product is free to use and is reportedly active on the Ethereum testnet.
Keep records on the blockchain
The idea stems from the fact that the Swiss government has enforced safety regulations and record-keeping requirements on who works on the tracks and whether they are proven to comply with track work, as train accidents are often linked to on-track malfeasance.
The task of keeping such records is complicated because multiple companies with multiple certificates must add entries to the ledger, making it the perfect candidate for a decentralized, shared ledger pilot project. This will grant interoperability between multiple parties contributing to the project.

Linum Labs revealed that the design goal revolves around building an open source mobile interface that is interoperable with SBB's external partners and provides a good user experience design.
